He abstained from executing the threat he had made, that if they did not leave he would have the gates broken down. It seems that after this the Bishop declared himself on the side of the nuns. This did not stop the Corregidor. He convoked another assembly, more numerous, says Ribera, than the two former meetings, and, notwithstanding all that Gaspar Daza and others could say on behalf of the Bishop and of the nuns, the matter was about to be decided definitively against the convent, when Teresa's friends, Gonzalez de Aranda and Francisco Salcedo, joined Master Gaspar in appealing to the Royal Council. Of course this appeal silenced for the moment the opposition to the new convent. It could go on under the authority of the Bishop, at least until the cause was decided by the Royal Council. But the cause involved great expense, and much sacrifice of time and trouble on the part of the good friends of St. Teresa who had taken up the affair so warmly. Gonzalez de Aranda was deputed to go to Madrid and urge on the suit, and on the part of the town other deputies were sent. At last a commission was appointed to examine the affair on the spot, and this again could not be carried out without expense. Teresa tells us that our Lord provided for all her needs in a marvellous manner. The influence of the Corregidor and his friends was exerted to the utmost, and most people were afraid to oppose him in a matter which he had so much at heart.
